    [0001] The present invention relates to cosmetic applicators and more particularly those having a support rod and an applicator member carried by the rod, the latter comprising a flexible portion. Applicators of this type are described in the applications US 2005/0031400 5 A1 and FR 2 996 739. In the application US 2005/0031400 A1, the flexible portion is defined by a narrowing of the cross section of the rod, possibly combined with the use of an elastically deformable material to achieve this flexible portion. The applicator described in patent application FR 2 996 739 aims to make it possible to further control the flexibility of the applicator by giving the flexible portion a flattened cross-section and a particular length. The application FR 2 868 265 discloses an applicator comprising a flexible portion which can be defined by a helical spring or by axial or helical material threads. This document also discloses a flexible diabolo-shaped portion, or a succession of recessed annular portions, or bellows spring form. US 4,509,540 discloses an applicator with a flexible portion constituted by a spring. There is a need to further improve this type of applicator in particular to allow the user to better control the loading of the product application member 20 and the making of makeup. The invention achieves this through an assembly comprising a makeup product and an applicator for applying the product, comprising a flexible portion of undulating shape, of flattened cross section along a major axis of the section, the flexible portion defining a succession of patterns. elementary, the flexible portion having its angular displacement around the major axis of the section which is limited by the abutment of at least two consecutive elementary units between them. In the invention, the fact that the flexible portion has a limited angular travel allows the user to better control the loading of the application member product, because once the flexible portion is in abutment, the user can more easily control the force exerted by the applicator member on the product or the surface to be made up, by pressing more or less on the applicator.

Similarly, the user can more easily control the loading of the applicator product. Finally, the flattened cross section increases stiffness in one direction, which allows the user to move the applicator member in that direction with less deformation of the flexible portion, to achieve accurate makeup. The flexible portion is connected to a handle of rectangular cross section, long sides parallel to the major axis. The form factor M / n of the cross section of the flexible portion is between 1 and 30. The flexible portion defines a succession of grooves alternately open on opposite sides of the applicator. Preferably, there are as many grooves on one side as the other, but alternatively the number of grooves is different. Thus, the term "corrugated" must be understood in the broad sense, as having at least one undulation, and the flexible portion of undulating shape may comprise a portion whose corresponding grooves open on only one side. The number of grooves open on one side may be between 1 and 10, the total number of grooves being preferably less than 10. The flexible portion is molded with a handle.

    [0006] The total length of the applicator, excluding application member, is between 3 and 40 and mm, better between 3 and 15 mm, even better between 10 and 15 mm. The applicator member has a symmetry with respect to a plane of symmetry, in particular perpendicular to the major axis, better axial symmetry.

The set 1 of packaging and application shown in Figure 1 comprises a product P, for example in the form of loose or compacted powder, present in a cup 3, and an applicator 10 having a handle 11 and an applicator member 20 arranged to take the product P and apply it on human keratin materials to make up, for example the skin of the eyelids. The product can still be a mascara or a lip gloss. Where appropriate, the product P and the applicator 10 may be contained in a housing not shown, having a base and a closure cover of the base. The base can possibly accommodate several cups each containing a product to be applied. The lid can be hinged to the base. As can be seen in particular in Figure 2, the handle 11 has an elongate shape along a longitudinal axis X, preferably rectilinear as illustrated.
    [0008] The handle 11 may have a cross section of generally rectangular shape, as can be seen in Figure 4, for example with a flattening factor L // between 1 and 4, L denoting the length and / its width. The handle 11, of length D, is extended at its distal end by an extension 21 which constitutes the core of the applicator member 20. In the example in question, this extension 21 is molded in one piece into the same material as the handle 11, and has a flattened shape in a plane of flattening which is parallel to the long sides of the cross section of the handle 11. The extension 21 has for example, as shown in Figure 2 in front view , an outline 22 of substantially oblong shape, which ends on the side of the handle 11 by two opposite edges 21a, parallel to the axis X. The applicator member 20 may comprise a coating 23, for example of foam, overmolded or otherwise affixed to the extension 21. This coating 23 may extend beyond the extension 21 along the X axis, on the side of the distal end of the applicator. The coating 23 may also protrude laterally from the extension 21. In the example of Figure 1, the coating 23 extends thus all around the extension 21 and in front thereof. In a variant not shown, the coating 23 is not foam but is constituted by a flocking.
    [0009] The thickness e of the extension 21 is for example between 0.6 and 2 mm and its largest width w is for example slightly greater than the length L of the long sides of the handle section. The length D of the handle 11 is for example between 45 and 55 mm. For example, the length L is between 4 and 6 mm and the width / between 3 and 4.5 mm. The handle 11 comprises a flexible portion 14, visible more particularly in FIG. 3. This flexible portion 14 is of undulating shape, with a succession of elementary patterns 15, one of which is represented in isolation in FIG. Flexible portion 14 may define as illustrated crenellations in the form of crenellations. The flexible portion 14 defines an area called "accordion". The flexible portion 14 is closer to the distal end of the shaft 11 than its proximal end. 303 1 2 82 5 Each elemental pattern 15 has in the example considered a crenellated form, with two flexible branches 15a, 15b substantially parallel to each other and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis X, these two branches defining between them a groove 15c having a rounded bottom 15d. The two branches 15a, 15b are interconnected by a connecting portion 15e, which extends substantially parallel to the axis X. Each branch 15a and 15b is bent at its end opposite to the intermediate portion 15e, so as to connect with the handle or with an adjacent elementary pattern. The branch 15b of an elementary pattern thus connects with the branch 15a of the following pattern by an intermediate portion 15e and defines therewith a groove 15f open on the opposite side to that on which the groove 15c opens. The throats can still be called slots when they are relatively narrow. The flexible portion 14 forms a succession of slots alternately open on one side and the other of the applicator, as can be seen in Figure 3 in particular. The branches 15a and 15b and the intermediate connecting portions 15e have a cross section of flattened shape, as shown in Figure 5, of major axis A parallel to the plane of Figure 2 and perpendicular to that of Figure 3. The grooves 15f close substantially when the flexible portion 14 abuts, that is to say that two consecutive branches 15a and 15b bear against one another on the opposite side to the bottom 15d of the groove 15f defined between them, which makes it more difficult to deform further in flexion of the flexible portion 14. When the deformation is substantially maximum, as shown in Figure 6, there is for example the Y axis of the distal portion 1 lb of the handle 11 which is at an angle with the longitudinal axis Z of the proximal portion 11a of the handle, less than 90 ° and for example between 20 and 85 °. The length at rest of the flexible portion 14, along the axis X, is for example between 3 and 20 mm. The radius of curvature at the bottom of the groove 15e or 15f is preferably between 0.2 and 0.5 mm, being for example 0.35 mm.
    [0010] To use the applicator, the user moves the applicator member 20 to the surface of the product P to load the applicator product. Then, the user can make up the skin by moving the applicator with the application member 20 to its contact. Preferably, the applicator member 20 is moved while the flattening direction of the extension 21 is substantially parallel to the skin, which provides some softness to the application. Alternatively, the user can move the applicator member 20 on the skin while the large faces of the extension 21 are substantially perpendicular to the skin. When the applicator is used with this orientation, the flexible portion 14 deforms much less in bending about a geometric axis that is parallel to the short sides of the rectangular section of the handle and the makeup can be done precisely. This can be useful for makeup the contours of the eyes or nose for example. The deformability of the applicator is thus greater around a geometric axis which is parallel to the long sides of the rectangular section of the handle, than perpendicular to it. The invention is not limited to the example which has just been described. In particular, the flexible portion may not be connected directly to a handle which defines the gripping area of the applicator, but may be indirectly connected by a rod to a gripping member, constituted for example by a closure cap intended for to screw on the threaded neck of a container to close it, such a container may be provided with a wiper member of the applicator rod. In variants not shown, the handle 11 has at its distal end a housing which receives a mounting end of an applicator member, for example a felt tip or an applicator member having a core of a material different from that handle 11, for example metal or elastomer. The shape of the flexible portion 14 may be modified, and in particular that of the elementary patterns which constitute the corrugations. Thus, as illustrated in Figure 8, the elementary patterns may have an arch shape rather than a slot. Preferably, the corrugations are centered on a median plane for the applicator member 20, as is the case for the applicator of FIG. 1. As a variant, the corrugations are eccentric on one side of the applicator , as shown in Figure 9 to promote the centering of the grip with respect to one side of the applicator.
    [0011] Preferably, the flexible portion comprises identical elementary patterns which are repeated, which gives periodic corrugations. In a variant, the elementary patterns are not identical, which gives pseudoperiodic or aperiodic ripples in order to have an evolution of the force necessary for bending. Preferably, the flexible portion 14 is made of a non-elastomeric material, which is the same as that in which the handle 11 is molded, for example a thermoplastic. Alternatively, the flexible portion 14 is made of a different material than the handle 11, including a less rigid material. It is possible to have a different number of grooves on one side of the applicator relative to the other in order to have two different flexibilities.
